These rugs, often decades old, are transformed into stunning “distress” and “patchwork” pieces, preserving the craftsmanship and cultural heritage of their origin.
These rugs are typically categorized by the regions they come from and feature a wide variety of traditional designs, including geometric, curvilinear, and floral patterns. Each town, city, or culture has its own distinct style, often woven into the rugs as a signature of local heritage, much like a brand or emblem.
Made from natural materials such as wool, cotton, or jute, many of these rugs are up to 60 years old, adding to their uniqueness and value. Since no two pieces are alike, they are highly sought after by collectors, who travel across these regions to uncover these hidden treasures. Once found, the rugs are transported to small villages, where they undergo a meticulous cleaning process, including being washed and dried in the sun for up to two months.
After this preparation, the rugs can either be sold in their original state as vintage items or transformed into beautiful patchwork pieces. Another popular option is to subject the rugs to chemical treatments that strip away up to 90% of their original colors, leaving only the deepest tones. These treated rugs are then re-dyed in vibrant, modern hues such as blue, turquoise, and pink, resulting in stunning, one-of-a-kind pieces that blend tradition with contemporary flair.
